Halifax

Established in 1925, the Halifax office was founded in the wake of the Halifax Explosion and the outpouring of compassion that followed. That instinct to rise up for those in crisis is the spirit this office has embodied ever since. 

Since then, the work has grown and taken many forms: funding critical programs, bridging gaps through policy advocacy, convening the Halifax Housing and Homelessness Partnership, leading the Building Poverty Solutions report in partnership, and quick coordinated responses to crisis like Hurricane Fiona and the Nova Scotia wildfires. Over a century later, the spirit that built this office is still the one driving it forward – the commitment to community and a belief that lasting change starts at home.

Lucy Lanni She/Her

Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer

Lucy Lanni is Executive Vice-President & Chief Operating Officer at United Way Maritimes, where she leads organizational operations spanning people and culture, finance and technology, governance, strategic and annual planning, performance management, marketing and communications, and organizational transformation.

During more than a decade with United Way, Lucy has grown through progressively senior roles, giving her a unique perspective on how nonprofit organizations evolve, scale, and build long-term sustainability. She played a key leadership role in the unification of seven United Ways across the Maritimes, helping navigate complex governance, organizational change, leadership alignment, and sustainability planning.

Lucy is particularly passionate about the future of nonprofit leadership and governance. She sees strong governance as an important driver of organizational resilience, leadership continuity and mission impact, and is energized by United Way Maritimes’ focus on strengthening nonprofit leadership and sector effectiveness.

Lucy holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and English from Saint Mary’s University and a Master of Public Administration from Dalhousie University. She is also a Prosci® Certified Change Practitioner. Lucy lives in Dartmouth with her husband and enjoys golfing, playing softball, and spending time outdoors.
