At United Way Maritimes, we focus on five key impact areas that reflect the realities people across our region are facing today. From meeting urgent needs to addressing root causes, our work is designed to inspire action, strengthen communities, and help end poverty across the Maritimes.

Education and Employment

Opportunity starts with access. We invest in learning, skills, and employment pathways that help people build financial stability and long-term security.

Food Security

Food is a basic human right. We help ensure access to nutritious, culturally appropriate food while addressing the root causes of food insecurity.

Housing and Homelessness

Homelessness is the situation of an individual or family without stable, safe, permanent, appropriate housing, or the immediate means or ability to acquire it.

Social Inclusion and Access

Connection and belonging are essential. We reduce isolation and remove barriers so everyone can fully participate in community life, ensuring no one is left behind.

Well-Being and Safety

Everyone deserves to feel safe and supported. We improve mental health and wellbeing, reduce harm from substance use, and address gender-based violence, helping people build healthier, safer lives.

How We Create Impact

These areas are deeply connected, and so are the solutions. We focus our efforts across three key approaches, because meaningful change happens at every stage:

Meeting Immediate Needs

We respond when people need help now - providing essentials like food, shelter, and basic supports during times of crisis.

Prevention & Early Intervention

We work upstream to help people stay out of crisis by strengthening skills, connections, and access to support, so individuals and families can move forward with confidence.

Addressing root causes

Lasting change means tackling the systems that create barriers in the first place. By working alongside partners, donors, governments, and the social sector, we help drive long-term solutions that improve quality of life across our communities.

Our Impact Pathways

How we do the work matters just as much as what we focus on. United Way Maritimes advances impact through four key pathways:

Community Investment

We fund programs and organizations making a difference on the ground, while helping donors align their giving with the greatest community needs.

Design & Delivery

We lead and deliver our own initiatives where we can have the greatest impact -from affordable housing initiatives to programs like 211.

Capacity Building

We strengthen the social sector by investing in leadership, skills, and organizational resilience through initiatives like ED Academy and governance training.

Thought Leadership

We use research, evaluation, and lived experience to inform solutions, influence public policy, and advocate for meaningful change across our region.
