A welcoming neighbourhood where everyone can belong
The Sackville Tiny Home Community is a neighbourhood where everyone has their own place, and everyone can belong. Residents are selected from the Halifax By-Name List, which is managed and maintained by the Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia. Like any neighbourhood in any community, residents have a variety of backgrounds, skills and experiences. Residents have access social opportunities, in-community amenities, and wrap around supports.
The Tiny Homes include all of the necessities of home, including a kitchen, bathroom, sleeping space and storage. They are furnished and include basic linens and dishes and personal supplies, so tenants require minimal belongings. The project employs a housing-first model, recognizing that stable housing is essential for individuals to overcome barriers and achieve stability in other areas of life. The wrap-around supports will be tailored to the specific needs of residents.
Providing high-quality, deeply affordable supportive housing
United Way is the owner and property manager of this development, which is providing high-quality, deeply affordable supportive housing to up to 70 residents. Residents pay rent equivalent to 30% of their income which includes services like power, water, and basic internet access. This project will help inform our long-term plans of becoming a non-market affordable housing provider.
Housing instability triggers a chain reaction of profound and lasting consequences, affecting individuals, families, and entire communities. This project, along with others across the region, are part of United Way Maritimes’ long-term plans as a non-market housing provider — and being owner and property manager allows us to ensure affordability always.
Quick Facts
60 units are part of the neighbourhood, made up of 50 single occupancy tiny homes and 10 that are suitable as a double occupancy unit for couples or as a fully accessible unit for someone with a disability.
United Way is the owner-operator of the Sackville Tiny Homes Community .
The service provider offering wrap-around supports is Atlantic Community Shelters Society with the tiny homes being built by Prestige Homes in Sussex, New Brunswick.
Tenants for the community will be selected from HRM’s By-Name List. This list, which is not maintained by United Way, identifies everyone who is in need of housing in HRM. If you or someone you know is in need of housing supports, please call 211 or visit their website.
